Bruno Senna (Ligier): "Still hopes for the FIA WEC title"

Bruno Senna has returned to endurance racing this year and the Brazilian driver, a member of the RGR Sport by Morand outfit (Ligier JS P2 #43) is delighted to be competing in LM P2. Here he tells about the start of his season, his win in Mexico last weekend and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

So your World Endurance Championship season started well with a victory?

“Yes, it started off on a high, which increases expectations a lot. So we started with a good race at Silverstone but in Spa we were very slow compared to the other guys – the Orecas were really much faster than us. But we’ve always had a great strategy and are consistent. In Belgium, we were in P2 but the safety car came out [after Stefan Mücke’s accident on Le Raidillon in the Ford GT] and that changed everything so we finished fourth. After Le Mans, there was Nürburgring where we finished 2nd. The car performed really well and we had a great race, although we would have preferred to stand on the top step of the podium. Mexico was a tough race but it was a perfect weekend with the pole positon, the fastest lap and the win. The team did a fantastic job. That podium was very special and I will never forget it, for sure.”

Things were a bit trickier at Le Mans where you finished tenth in LM P2 (15th overall)...

“Things were difficult in Le Mans. We had a really bad pace. We had an engine problem in the third hour of the race and we lost half an hour because of that. It’s a shame because if you look at the rest of the race, we could have finished third which isn’t bad when you consider how much slower we were compared to the top guys. The Orecas have the upper hand in terms of pace. But we’ve done a good job so far, we’ve just had some bad luck but that’s racing. We’re up there doing the best we can and the points are coming in so I think the engineers, the mechanics and the drivers can be happy with the job we are doing.”

There are still four rounds to go. Are there still hopes for the title?

“The battle for the champoinship is far from over. Of course we had a big deficit of points after Le Mans but we still have our chances and the Mexico win helps. We currently stand second with 97 points, 33 behind the #36 Alpine A460. We need to make sure we keep scoring the points and we will see where we are at the end of the year. Ricardo’s been doing a really good job, he’s very consistent and makes very few mistakes. Filipe is really fast, so we have to carry on doing our thing.”

Do you plan to continue in endurance racing over the coming seasons?

“Yeah! I enjoy endurance and I enjoy being with my teammates. There’s a great team spirit. If these guys continue, I'm going to make sure I continue with them!”
